Most Wanted:
Smash Bros Character DLC
By Brandon Sultana and Harry Sheridan June 23, 2015
Super Smash Bros is a huge talking point among fans. I know many people like ourselves have had so many conversations about who they want to enter the iconic franchise. With the addition of DLC, fans are able to speculate long after the release of the game. Here, we’ve listed our top picks of who we want the most to duke it out alongside the incredible roster already in the game. Keep in mind this is an opinions piece, and not a prediction one, so characters that already have a role in the game as NPCs are fair game
King K. Rool
Brandon Sultana: I’ve been a very strong advocate for the inclusion of K. Rool for quite some time. He was my most wanted character before the game came out, and he still stands out as someone who would be an excellent addition to the cast. We need more villains, we need more DK characters, and his moveset potential is endless. A very slow, projectile character would be an interesting idea, sort of a mix of King Dedede and Duck Hunt. He could even sport the different outfits from various boss fights throughout the series as alternate costumes. K. Rool really deserves the spot, and it’d make a ton of fans like myself happy. The king has been out of the spotlight for way too long.
Waluigi
Harry Sheridan: Okay, I know what you’re going to say, but just because Waluigi has never been in a main series Mario game doesn’t mean he can’t make it into Smash! Not long ago, I too was a naysayer. I couldn’t understand why people wanted Sakurai to spend time bringing in a new character that was ugly, weird, and hardly relevant. Then I found Wa. I played some of the games with Waluigi in them, watched some videos about Waluigi, hell, I even read a really nice fan comic about the guy! For whatever reason, Waluigi has managed to beat the odds and become a fairly popular character amongst Nintendo fans. Add that to the fact that They’re running out of major Mario characters and Waluigi wins by default! Besides, who wouldn’t want to see the infamous Waluigi crotch-chop as a victory animation?
B: It might be a bit difficult to justify yet another Mario newcomer after the two we got in this game on top of the return of Dr. Mario from Melee, so maybe he should get saved for the next game. But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to Wa it up in Smash 4.
Marshal
B: I decided to pick up Rhythm Heaven Fever on a whim due to the rumors of Chorus Men getting into the game as newcomers before the release of the game. While that never proved true, that game became one of my favorite games I played in 2014. Honestly, I’ll take just about any character from the series as a character, but Marshal seems like the best pick in our eyes. He could play as a Mr. Game & Watch esque character where every single one of his moves is a reference to one of the various mini games throughout the series. You could even implement a timing gimmick into some of his moves.
Excitebike
H: Okay, I’ll admit that this is a weird one, but I’ve wanted Excitebike as a retro-rep character (like Ice Climbers, Pit, and Duck Hunt). I have absolutely no idea how he’d play, but if anyone could figure that out, it’d be Sakurai. I just want a character that’s Wario’s motorcycle move, except 100% of the time. Also, I really like the game Excitebike, so it’d be cool if it got more representation in Smash.
Ridley
B: The controversial one. You probably know all the points Ridley supporters and detractors bring up. We need more villains and Metroid reps, similar to K. Rool, but his very...large size brings up difficulty when turning him into a playable fighter. His status as a boss character makes his chances incredibly low, but this isn’t a prediction list. It’s a want list. Incredible mods of Project M show that he is entirely possible. It’d definitely not be easy, but as the communities most wanted character for the past two games, I think he is worth the extra effort.
Ice Climbers
H: I know these guys aren’t very realistic, since they were cut due to technical constraints, but man, would I love to see them make a comeback. They were always a super unique pair of characters (although that uniqueness has diminished a bit since the introduction of Rosalina & Luma) and they were a blast to play. Personally, I was sad to see them cut because I had only just started playing them a lot around the end of Brawl, so I didn’t have a lot of time to use them before Smash 4 came out.
B: Originally, I didn’t think I’d miss this duo that much. I never really played as them, or played their game. But months on, I really do notice their absence. It’s a case of how you don’t realize how much you like something until they are gone. I’m not really an advocate of separating them to put them in the game, as it takes away their one defining trait, but I really do miss them, and would love to see them as inclusions as DLC, or perhaps returning veterans in Smash 5.
Solid Snake
H: When Snake was first announced, he was considered a strange choice for a newcomer, especially since he was a 3rd Party character. Now that years have passed and a new Smash game has been released, he’s considered a strange choice for a DLC character, especially since he’s a 3rd Party character that’s already been cut once. Sure, he may not be a particularly relevant character when it comes to modern Nintendo, but neither is Ryu and he was just released as DLC. Anyway, I really think it’d be great if Snake made his return to Smash Bros, especially since he was such a unique character in terms of fighting-style, design, and tone. Also, I’d really love it if Shadow Moses Island came back, it was my favorite stage in Brawl.
B: Snake was such an odd choice for Brawl. As much as I really enjoyed his fighting style, I can’t say I miss him all that much. Maybe I’m just not that big of a fan of a character who has so little connection with Nintendo being included. Had Snake’s inclusion lead to closer ties between the companies, similar to what occurred with Sonic in Brawl, I’d be all for his reinclusion. The fact that this game sports a far brighter art style than Brawl would also make him stick out even more than he originally did. But I would definitely not say no to his inclusion, I’m just not actively rooting for him.
Inklings
B: As the heads of the first new IP out of Nintendo EAD since Pikmin, it’s clear that the Inklings have every right to get into Smash. It’s always good to represent brand new franchises, and the Inklings would be an excellent choice. With the huge variety of weapons found in the game, a moveset would be a non-issue, and you could even implement the squid form in really interesting ways. I could easily see these characters saved for the next installment of Smash, especially with the recent Mii costumes, but they could bring a fresh (hehe) new playstyle and franchise into the mix.
Takamaru
H: Alright, I’m going to be perfectly honest with you, I’ve never played The Mysterious Murasame Castle; however, that doesn’t stop me from hoping that Takamaru shows up some time in the future as a playable DLC character. Despite the fact that he’d be yet another blue haired swordsman, his samurai style and various weapons could easily help to set him apart. I mean, he was even considered as a character at one point, but was demoted to Assist Trophy because of his lack of popularity in the West. He may not be quite as popular or iconic as his Nintendo peers, but I certainly think he’d make an excellent retro newcomer.
Literally Anything From Zelda (Except Young Link)
H: Okay, I get that we already have the important Zelda characters in the game, being Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf, but I think we’re way overdue for a new Zelda character since we haven’t had any since Melee. (No, Toon Link doesn’t count since he’s pretty much just Young Link with a better design.) I think any number of characters would make appropriate representatives of the franchise, such as Impa, Darunia, Midna, Skull Kid, or Ghirahim (We do need more villain characters). It’s easy to make the argument that most of these characters don’t appear in more than one game, but I personally don’t think that matters. There aren’t really many major recurring Zelda characters left and I think it’s time to start diving a little bit deeper.
Reginald "Reggie" Fils-Aime
B: While Reggie would be the stupidest addition ever, you can’t help but think he’d be an incredible addition. The man is a walking Nintendo meme, and would be hilarious. I know questions would be raised on putting an actual person in the game, but he’s a Nintendo icon, arguably a bigger one than many characters in this game. He’d make the perfect joke character, hitting people with Nintendo hardware and spouting his famous lines (He’d also be the worst character in the game because of his incident with HungryBox). Heck, you could even include other icons as alternates like Bill and Iwata, similar to Bowser Jr and the Koopalings.
