Smash Final Presentation: Predictions
by Brandon Sultana & Harry Sheridan
December 12th, 2015
It's finally time for the last Super Smash Bros presentation. It's been quiet a ride, and our hype is unmatched. Cloud's reveal opened up so many possibilities, just thinking about them all has us so excited. We won't go too in depth regarding some things, as we've already done articles on them, so this is just a general article on things we think are likely inclusions to Super Smash Bros. We don't think that EVERYTHING will be announced though, as this is just the final dedicated broadcast, so other reveals in Directs are still totally possible. With that said, let's begin.
Characters
Seeing as we already have an article regarding the characters we WANT to see (you can find that here), we are going to talk about the characters we think have a good chance at being revealed. We’ve already talked about pretty much already all of these characters at length, so we'll just list them off. There is one character who's chances have risen quiet a bit though, and we'll go a bit more in depth with him.
K. Rool
Inklings
Wolf
Impa
Isaac
Banjo-Kazooie
Banjo is the odd one. Up until around a month ago, I thought he had absolutely no chance. I thought people were looking way too much into Phil Spencer’s Tweet regarding the matter, and that it was ludicrous to think that he had a legitimate chance. Now that Cloud basically shattered all of the “rules”, I think that Banjo has a pretty good chance. He’s done very well in all the fan polls, and very much fit in as a huge name for a 3rd Party character. In both of our opinions, he is easily the most likely 3rd Party character to enter as DLC, and we’d both be overjoyed to see him. There are very few characters that could match the hype that Cloud created, but this duo is certainly one of them.
Stages
Similar to characters, we’ve already talked a lot about the stages we’d like to see/expect to see in various other articles (which you can find here), we’ll just give a short list of stage predictions to go along with our predicted characters.
Gangplank Galleon (with K. Rool)
Inkopolis (With Inklings)
Kakariko Village (with Impa)
Corneria (With Wolf)
Venus Lighthouse (With Isaac)
Spiral Mountain (Banjo-Kazooie)
Various Retro Stages
Maybe Something New
New Modes
Sakurai has gone on the record saying that he’d like to add more modes to this game. So far, all we’ve really seen is the absolutely awful online Tournament Mode. Here are some of our picks for modes we’d like to see added to the game.
Break the Targets
Bran: The lack of Break the Targets in this game is an absolute crime. The sorry excuse for it in Target Smash is simply not fun. I’d love to see Break the Targets make it’s triumphant return as a mode. Personally, I’d rather see the Melee version, where every character had their own unique stage. However seeing how this character roster is massive, seeing the Brawl version with 5 stages built for all characters would be totally acceptable. I’d take that over nothing.
Melee-esque Adventure Mode
Bran: I’ve basically done everything there is to do in Smash when it comes to Single Player, so I’d love to have something big to sink my teeth into all over again. Melee’s adventure mode was never amazing, but it had an absurd amount of untapped potential that I think could be implemented into a new version. They should take the concept of running through tons of Nintendo themed worlds and amplify it. You can run through levels of Mario, Kirby, and Donkey Kong. Explore labyrinths from Zelda and Metroid. Have battles against Fire Emblem, Earthbound, and Pokemon characters. Now that Smash Bros represents so many more series than it did back in Melee, the possibilities are truly endless. It’d definitely be a big undertaking to make this happen, but I think it'd be totally worth it.
Offline Tournaments
Harry: Seriously, this was a major oversight when they brought Tournaments to Smash 4. Being able to orchestrate your own local tourneys was a ton of fun back in the Brawl days and I genuinely couldn’t believe that they decided it wasn’t necessary for Smash 4. Coupled with how terrible the online-only tournament mode can be, I think it’s completely necessary for Sakurai to let us host our own Tournaments locally.
Character Stock Mode
Bran: If there is one positive that can be possibly be pulled from Smash Tour, it’s the ending battle where each of your characters count as an individual stock. A lot of fighting games have this as an option, and having a mode in Smash where you can pick a few characters to go into a battle would be tons of fun. Seeing as it's already in the game, it couldn't possibly be difficult for them to implement it into regular smashing.
Smash Run
Harry: I think it was a mistake making this mode exclusive to the 3DS version of the game (well, I think the entirety of the 3DS version was a mistake). It was an okay mode with a lot of potential that I think it could achieve if it was brought to the Wii U and given a local-play option.
Harry: This is the big one. For the final DLC update, Sakurai will completely erase all of Smash 4 from your Wii U’s memory and replace it with Melee HD. This is the only way. 20XX is now.
